This group meets occasionally in Edinburgh to consider the philosophical and spiritual history of the Scottish nation. Subjects studied include the lives and works of people such as the Celts, Columba, Queen Margaret, John Duns Scotus, David Hume, Thomas Reid and Robert Burns.

Economics with Justice Group

The study of economics was the founding inspiration behind the School. Dismayed by the poverty and despair of the great depression of the 1930’s a small group of founders were convinced that economics was profoundly misunderstood and set about looking for natural laws that could help govern societies rather than the failing conventional means. Economics with Justice offers a different perspective on conventional economic thought and practice and the course is presented on an occasional basis within the Edinburgh branch over three terms.

Lucca Trip

Every two or three years the School holds a residential study week at the Villa Boccella, Lucca, Italy. These successful trips have allowed the students to study the Italian Renaissance together in very fine surroundings. Our next scheduled trip is planned for 2012.

Details of planned trips can be provided by Alan Bryan on 07812 073 720.

  • “I enjoy meeting extremely interesting and like-minded people”

“There are no certificates or diploma , but the rewards of going to the School are far greater. You come away with a more peaceful, happier life.”

“I found the School by chance and I’m still here five years later. I am certain that the teachings can be of great benefit to everyone.”

“The School is hugely reassuring and inspiring.”

“Some months after I joined the School I found I was able to leave behind much of the baggage that I’d been carrying around with me. The greatest joy is being able to bring the mind to rest and experience a wonderful stillness and peace.”

“Attending the School of Philosophy has changed my life. At the beginning it helped me come out of a very dark place. It has helped me find my true self and brought light and empowerment back into my life. I could write a lot more but then it would be too much.”

“Philosophy has opened the eyes of my eyes.”

“The benefits of the teaching include making clear, confident decisions and making life seem more simple and less stressful than before.”

“I’m not an academic and please be rest assured that the School welcomes everyone regardless of class, age, sex, education and religious conviction (or not) . Please give it a go – you have everything to gain!?”

“The School has enabled me to realise my true potential in this lifetime and share this valuable knowledge with those around me.”

“My first term was filled with joy!”

“The philosophy classes have introduced me to a more meaningful reality and a more appropriate way of living.”

“It is hard to convey in words the sense of gratitude I feel for the sense of freedom and purpose attained from attending the school and for the many beautiful people I have met along the way. I would highly recommend attending a course and may it be every bit as profitable for you as it has been for me.”

“I have put my experience in the classes into practical use and have found a huge difference in my behaviour already. I look forward every week to the clases.”

“I find myself now full of peace.”

“Having attended the courses, I am actually so much happier with myself. My family and friends have noticed the difference too.”
